Kurz zum Hintergrund des Gedankenexperiments: Ich durfte vor Eltern von Vorschulkindern in einer Kita einen Vortrag halten und wollte etwas hinterlassen, das den Eltern auf jeden Fall im Gedächtnis bleibt. Beim Überlegen stich mir meine – zwar total angesagte – aber leider leicht gammlige Pilea-Pflanze ins Auge. Ich entschied, diese zum Vortrag mitzubringen und zeigte sie den Zuhörenden. Sofort kamen mir Kommentare wie „Die lässt aber den Kopf hängen“ oder „Der geht’s aber gar nicht gut“ entgegen.
Überleg mal, was fällt Dir als ersten ein, wenn du dir meine gammelige Pilea-Pflanze vorstellst? – Mich erreichten sofort gutgemeinte Ratschläge wie:
- „Die hat nicht genügend Wasser“.
- „Der Topf ist viel zu klein“.
- „Die Pflanze braucht mehr Licht“.
Und was haben alle diese gutgemeinten Tipps gemeinsam? – Genau! Wenn Menschen eine Pflanze sehen, der es nicht gut geht, überlegen sie was ihr fehlt.
Aber was, wenn Menschen ein Kind sehen, dem es in der Schule nicht gut geht? Ein Kind, das über Bauchschmerzen klagt sobald es zur Schule soll oder dauerhaft schlechte Noten nach Hause bringt. Dann wird gefragt:
- „Was stimmt mit dem Kind nicht?“.
Schnell wird vermutet, dass das Kind an ADHS, Dyskalkulie, einer sozial-emotionalen Verhaltensauffälligkeit oder einer Lernbeeinträchtigung leidet. Das Kind wird zum Logopäden oder zur Psychotherapie geschickt. Kurz: Mit dem Kind stimmt was nicht.

Warum wir Kinder wie Pflanzen betrachten sollten

Anders als bei der Pflanze fragen wir uns bei Kindern nicht, was mit ihrer Umgebung nicht stimmt. Wir fragen eben nicht: Was fehlt dem Kind eigentlich? – Denn die Umgebung des Kindes (die Schule) ist seit Jahren so wie sie ist und wir alle müssen und mussten da durch. Blüht unsere Pflanze nicht optimal, ändern wir die Rahmenbedingungen. Doch beim Kind suchen wir den Fehler bei ihm selber. Warum können wir mit Kindern nicht so umgehen wie mit Pflanzen?
Nun zurück zu meiner Pilea-Pflanze. Wie es wahrscheinlich viele machen würden, habe ich zuerst Google nach möglichen Ursachen für das schlechte Wohlbefinden meiner Pilea-Pflanze durchforstet. Weitere Anlaufstellen wären Experten auf dem Fachgebiet. Meine Vorgehensweise lässt sich also wie folgt beschreiben:
- Informieren
- Vermeintliche Ursache finden und Gegenmaßnahme einführen (z.B. Pflanze ist überwässert, also gieße ich sie erstmal nicht.)
Als ich merkte, dass es meiner Pflanze trotz weniger Wasser nicht besser ging, suchte ich ihr einen neuen Platz mit mehr Licht. Das heißt, immer wenn eine Strategie nicht funktioniert, probieren wir es mit einer anderen. Wenn wir dann den Kern erreichen, bleiben wir dran und beobachten. Und das wichtigste: Wir geben nicht auf. Wir bleiben am Ball. Wir begleiten die Pflanze bis sie ihren Weg gefunden hat. Wir freuen uns über jeden kleinen Fortschritt. Wir haben keine Erwartungen. Und das alles, weil wir wissen, dass eine Pflanze nicht schneller wächst, wenn wir an ihr ziehen. Wir geben ihr die Zeit, die sie braucht um in ihrer individuellen Schönheit zu strahlen.
Genau das wünsche ich mir für unsere Kinder! – Ich möchte, dass alle (Pädagogen, Eltern etc.) wenn sie ein Kind sehen, das Schwierigkeiten in der Schule hat, nicht anfangen den Fehler beim Kind zu suchen. Das Kind mit einer beliebigen Diagnose abzustempeln, bedeutet sich aus der Verantwortung zu ziehen. Das Problem ist viel komplexer.

Wir sollten uns fragen, was können wir tun um die Rahmenbedingungen zu verändern?
Wir sollten uns daran erinnern, in welchen Momenten ein Kind so richtig gestrahlt hat? Das kann zum Beispiel beim Sport sein, wo das Kind voller Ehrgeiz war. Du kannst Dir sicher sein: Jedes Kind hat diese Klassenheld-Momente und kann solche auch in der Schule erreichen. Dafür müssen manchmal nur ein paar Dinge verändert werden.

Wenn du dir diese Tipps zu Herzen nimmst, wirst du sehen, wie auch dein Kind aufblüht. Denn klar ist: Dein Schulkind hat schon alles in sich, was es braucht. Es steht nur noch etwas im Weg, was Ihr gemeinsam beseitigen müsst. Du bist der/die Expert*in für dein Kind.
Abschließend bleibt nur zu sagen: Suche den Fehler nicht bei deinem Kind. Der Fehler liegt in der Umgebung, die sich so schnell nicht verändern lässt. Deswegen liegt es an uns! Suche dir gerne jetzt eine Pflanze und präge Sie dir ein. Immer wenn dein Kind Wutausbrüche hat oder frustriert ist, dann denkst Du an diese Pflanze. Das wird dir helfen, die Umgebung zu hinterfragen und nicht dein Kind. Genauso wie wir es bei Pflanzen machen!
